Car hire is recommended in many parts of Spain, especially the Costa Brava, not only to reach the lovely beaches but also to visit the many places of beauty that is on offer. The rates will vary quite considerably so do shop around to find exactly what you are looking for. Is fully comprehensive insurance included? Unlimited mileage? These points should be taken into consideration when renting a car in Spain. If you plan to have a day trip in Barcelona we recommend traveling by train or bus, both very reasonable forms of transport in Spain. The car parking charges in Barcelona are high and the traffic is very dense.
Below are a few helpful tips with car rentals in Spain
- There are a number of toll motorways all over Spain, take this into consideration when making travel plans.
- Always have your Driver's Licence, Passport and Rental Agreement with you.
- Always wear your Seat belts (front and back), (on the spot fines incurred).
- Speeding and Drink-Driving both have heavy fines.
- All around the Barcelona area there is a 80km per hour speed limit even on the motorways, be warned!
- When comparing prices make sure that Taxes and delivery charges are included. Also ask if there is a surcharge for extra mileage.
- Vehicles in Spain as most of Europe drive on the right side of the road, if you are not used to driving a left wheel drive try hiring an automatic car as this will make gear changing easier!
ALGARVE
There are many car hire firms offering cheap car rentals in the Algarve with many different options. Most offer all inclusive fully comprehensive insurance but might not be included in the "Standard rate". Check on fuel empty/full policy.
